Zeaxanthin (Zeaxanthin, 3,3'-dihydroxy-β-carotene), also known as zeaxanthin, molecular formula C40H56O2, molecular weight 566.88,is an isoprene, an oxygenated carotenoid ( Xanthophyll), a lutein isomer with lutein. Most of the zeaxanthin found in nature is the All-e-iso-mer. Zeaxanthin is a new type of oil-soluble natural pigment widely found in green leafy vegetables, flowers,fruits, alfalfa and yellow corn. In nature, it often coexists with lutein, β-carotene, cryptoxanthin, etc. to form a mixture of carotenoids.

 

1.Anticancer effect 

Zeaxanthin, like many carotenoids, protects against damage to cells and organs caused by free radicals in the body. Studies have shown that zeaxanthin is more effective than β-carotene in inhibiting auto-oxidation of cellular lipids and preventing cell damage by oxidation, whereas peroxidation of cellular lipids is associated with tumor growth, indicating that zeaxanthin has Reduce the incidence of cancer and enhance the function of immune function. 

 

2. Prevention of cardiovascular 

Studies have reported that people who consume more carotenoids daily have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (Angiocardiopathy). The researchers found that zeaxanthin inhibited the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) under in vitro conditions; zeaxanthin significantly reduced the incidence of myocardial infarction and helped slow the progression of arteriosclerosis.

Zeaxanthin is one of the only two carotenoids in the lens. It has 11 conjugated double bonds in its molecule and a hydroxyl group on the tail group. This structure gives it a strong antioxidant capacity.

Zeaxanthin has strong antioxidant properties and is compared with commonly used synthetic antioxidants (BHT) in antioxidant capacity. One oxygen-containing group on two six-membered carbon rings in the zeaxanthin molecule has greater stability and strong coloring ability. 

3. New beverages 

Zeaxanthin is widely found in fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and as one of the main components of carotenoids, it has the effects of preventing AMD, cataracts, and cardiovascular diseases. As a health food additive, zeaxanthin has been approved by the US FDA as a new nutritional supplement for foods, and its dosage is generally not more than 5%. 4. Farming feed 

Zeaxanthin is used as a feed additive to improve the nutritional status of animals, egg yolk, poultry meat and skin.
