Losartan potassium, marketed as Kosuya, is used for the treatment of essential hypertension and is indicated for patients on combination therapy.

Functions

Losartan is a synthetic, strong oral active drug. Binding assay and pharmacological biological assay demonstrated that it can selectively bind to AT1 receptor. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that losartan and its pharmacologically active carboxylic acid metabolite (E-3174) can block the corresponding physiological effects of angiotensin II synthesis from any source or by any route. Compared with other peptide angiotensin II antagonists, losartan had no excitatory effect.
