Thiamin (also called thiamine or vitamin B1) is a water-soluble vitamin consisting of a substituted pyrimidine ring joined by a methylene bridge to a substituted thiazole ring.
Since vitamin B1 is not stored in appreciable amounts in the body, it must be supplied daily from dietary sources.In the human body, the highest concentrations of vitamin B1 are found in muscle, heart, liver, kidneys, and brain.
Thiamin pyrophosphate plays a key role in the production of energy from food by acting as a coenzyme for four important enzymes. These enzymes are pyruvate dehydrogenase, alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, and branched chain ketoacid dehydrogenase.
Thiamin pyrophosphate is also essential for the function of transketolase which catalyzes reactions in the pentose phosphate pathway. Transketolase helps produce pentose-5-phosphate (required for synthesis of ATP and GTP) and participates in the synthesis of nucleotides, DNA, RNA, and NADPH. Thiamin has an important function in nerve membranes and in nerve conduction, although the mechanism is unclear.
